Residents Doubt Police Will Catch Killers In Reiger Park Mass Shooting Amid Growing Frustration

Residents of Reiger Park say they have little faith that police will arrest those responsible for the deadly weekend mass shooting that claimed six lives.
According to witnesses, two vehicles drove past a group of people on Saturday, opening fire and killing six individuals on the spot. Three others were rushed to hospital and are recovering from gunshot wounds.
As of Monday, no arrests had been made. Acting Ekurhuleni Mayor Jongizizwe Dlabathi visited the area to meet the families of the deceased and hear the community’s concerns.

During the meeting, frustrated residents alleged that they know who the perpetrators are but claimed that their families are shielding them from the law.
One resident expressed despair, saying she no longer believes government intervention will change anything.
“Then you just see them out walking in the streets, the dockets are gone, there’s no case, a lack of evidence, today they are in, tomorrow they come and they do it again.”
Community Demands Action as Gang Violence Plagues Reiger Park
Community leader Hein April said residents are tired of hollow promises and want real solutions.
“We would want to see more consistent feet of police on the ground, we want consistency and involvement of the municipality [to deal with] the social ills in our community, we need more than words.”
In response, Acting Mayor Dlabathi assured the community that authorities would protect anyone who comes forward with credible information about the suspects.
Dlabathi linked the surge in violent crimes to drug abuse and gang activity, urging communities to help tackle the problem by cutting off the demand for illegal substances.
“Society must refuse to create demand for drug supply because once that exists, you are giving rise to the business of drugs, you are giving rise to gangster who are fighting for the space, the territory.”
