Repeat Offender Sentenced To 15 Years For Rape

A 36-year-old Eastern Cape man, Bonginkosi Ngcingci, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.

The suspect was jailed for raping a 26-year-old woman while on parole for previous convictions of rape, robbery, and housebreaking.

Ngcingci will serve the remainder of his initial 15-year sentence before beginning his new sentence.

Calculated Attack

According to National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesperson Luxolo Tyali, Ngcingci followed the victim and her friend from a local hangout spot in Makhanda’s Joza Location on December 23, 2023.

An altercation occurred when Ngcingci demanded to speak to the victim despite her resistance.

The situation escalated, with Ngcingci throwing alcohol on the victim.

Later, the victim found Ngcingci on her bed, armed with a knife, and he proceeded to rape her.

A Failed Attempt To Escape Justice

After the assault, Ngcingci demanded that the victim walk him out of her home to create the impression that he had slept over by agreement.

The victim agreed out of fear and later ran to her brother’s nearby flat for help.

Ngcingci attempted to flee but was chased by the victim’s brother.

He was eventually arrested after his mother instructed him to turn himself in.

Trial Proceedings

In court, Ngcingci pleaded not guilty, claiming that the sex was consensual and that he and the victim were in a relationship.

However, under cross-examination, his story changed, and he accused the victim of stealing from him.

Eastern Cape Director of Public Prosecution Barry Madolo welcomed the ruling, commending the prosecutor for ensuring justice and closure for the victim and her family.
