Reiger Park Shooting Suspect Walks Free Due To Lack Of Evidence

The sole suspect arrested in connection with the deadly drive-by shooting that claimed six lives in Reiger Park, east of Johannesburg, has been released after prosecutors found insufficient evidence to proceed with the case.

The 23-year-old man was arrested on Monday following the weekend attack, in which gunmen opened fire on a group of people in what police believe was a gang-related shooting. Six victims were killed on the scene, while three others sustained injuries.

NPA Says Case Against Suspect Not Strong Enough

The suspect was expected to appear before the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. However, the matter was not placed on the court roll, with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirming that it would not be pursuing charges at this stage.

“The NPA took a decision not to institute any criminal proceedings against the suspect,” said Gauteng NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane.

“Upon perusal of the contents of the docket, the prosecutor came to the conclusion that there is currently no evidence in the docket that links the suspect to the alleged offences.”

Gang Violence in Reiger Park Under Scrutiny

The Reiger Park shooting is the latest in a series of violent incidents to rock the East Rand, with authorities expressing concern over escalating gang activity in the area.

Police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing and urged anyone with information to come forward as detectives continue to trace the gunmen responsible for the massacre.
