Ravensmead Horror: Two Youngsters Shot Dead While Walking To Tuckshop

Shock gripped the Ravensmead community in Western Cape on Sunday night after two young people were fatally shot and another left seriously injured while heading to a local tuckshop.

Chelsea “Lilly” Matthyse, 22, and Ashlin Petersen, 19, were gunned down on Anamone Street at approximately 8.34pm when a white Toyota Etios, carrying four occupants, opened fire. A 20-year-old male, caught in the crossfire, survived and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Ashlin’s relatives revealed that he appeared to have been specifically targeted. “We were sitting in the living room, and the gunshots went off repeatedly. You don’t even kill an animal like that. It’s like they emptied their gun on him,” a family member said.

“They were out for him, but he distanced himself from many things; he would just be at home, go out to do odd jobs, walk, then come back home and stand by the shop. I was shocked when I saw Lilly was also shot because she used to come by our house as well.”

Ravensmead Families Devastated as Police Investigate

At Chelsea’s family home, relatives were overwhelmed with grief as they recounted the harrowing attack. “We do not know what happened because we were at home; we just heard the gunshots. She was a lovely person and wasn’t involved in any wrongdoing,” they said.

Family members added chilling details about the assault: “We heard that after they shot her and while she was lying there, they circled back to her and shot her again.”

Police Arrest Two Suspects, Motive Believed Gang-Related

Police confirmed that two men have been apprehended, while two others remain at large. Captain FC van Wyk of Ravensmead SAPS stated: “Ravensmead SAPS Crime Prevention Unit, who were patrolling in the vicinity, heard the gunshots and chased a white Toyota Etios. The occupants of the vehicle fired several shots at the members.”

He continued: “The members pulled the vehicle over on De La Rey Road. Two suspects jumped out of the vehicle and fled the scene, and two were arrested in the vehicle. The members found one magazine, loaded with 17 nine mm rounds, in the vehicle.”

The arrested men, aged 26 and 30, are expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court. Investigations suggest the attack was gang-related, with police continuing their search for the remaining two suspects.
