Rand Hits Record Low Against British Pound Amid US Tariff Shock

The South African Rand plummeted to an all-time low against the British Pound on Wednesday morning, trading well over R25 to the Pound — the weakest level in history. The currency crash comes on the heels of a dramatic escalation in global trade tensions, as the United States enforces sweeping new tariffs.

Trump’s Tariff Blitz Triggers Market Turmoil

Global markets were rattled this week after the United States — under President Donald Trump’s renewed leadership — imposed sweeping 10% tariffs on imports from several global trading partners. The biggest blow landed on China, with tariffs on Chinese goods skyrocketing to 104%, in what many analysts are calling the start of a new global trade war.

Additional tariff hikes were imposed on imports from Japan, the European Union, and South Africa, which now faces a 30% tariff increase on exports to the US.

Rand Weakens Under Dual Pressure: Global and Local Risks

Chief economist at Econometrix, Dr. Azar Jammine, told Jacaranda FM that the Rand’s slump was the result of two key pressures: global economic instability and domestic political uncertainty.

“It leaves the Rand and the oil at new all-time lows, and so that’s not very positive for people, especially in South Africa, because a low currency would lead to higher inflation and no more interest rate cuts,” said Jammine.

While many emerging market currencies are taking a hit, the Rand appears to be falling harder and faster than most.

“There are many other emerging markets weakening too, but the Rand is worse off due to the uncertainty surrounding whether the government of national unity remains intact,” Jammine added, referring to the political gridlock in South Africa.

Fuel Prices May Drop Despite Rand Slump

Interestingly, the falling global oil price could help shield South Africans from the usual consequences of a weaker South African currency — at least at the fuel pump.

“Even though the Rand has depreciated, oil prices have fallen even further than the Rand has, meaning fuel prices are not going to rise any time soon and may even fall significantly next month,” said Jammine.

However, the outlook for interest rates remains uncertain. While lower inflation might usually pave the way for rate cuts, the Reserve Bank is expected to hold off in the face of the volatile Rand.

“Whether the Reserve Bank will lower the Repo Rate in May, I doubt it, though,” Jammine explained. “They’ll likely wait for things to settle down before making a move.”
