Rameez Patel Sentenced To Life Imprisonment For 2015 Murder Of Wife In Polokwane

Justice has finally been delivered in a case that has spanned almost a decade. The High Court of South Africa, Limpopo Division sitting in Polokwane, has sentenced businessman Rameez Patel (38) to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife, Fatima Choomara Patel (28), who was killed in 2015.

In addition to the life sentence for murder, the court imposed a further five years’ imprisonment for unlawful possession of a firearm and three years for unlawful possession of ammunition. Patel, a resident of Nirvana in Polokwane, was also stripped of his legal right to own a firearm.

“The court also declared the accused unfit to possess a firearm,” confirmed Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi, Limpopo regional spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

Background to the Rameez Patel Murder Trial

Patel pleaded not guilty when the trial began in 2016. The State, however, presented evidence pointing to a troubled marriage marked by repeated disputes, which prosecutors linked to the accused’s extramarital affairs.

“On 10 April 2015, Fatima Patel was found shot dead in their apartment in Nirvana, Polokwane, following ongoing marital disputes related to the accused’s extramarital affairs. Police evidence indicated that there were no signs of forced entry at the apartment,” said Malabi.

Patel initially claimed that intruders had killed his wife, but this version of events was undermined by forensic findings and witness testimony presented during the trial.

Forensic Evidence and Witness Testimony Strengthen the Case

The court heard that Patel attempted to conceal evidence after the murder. According to testimony, he instructed his younger brother, Razeen Patel, to hide a box containing a firearm at a shop.

“The court further heard that Rameez Patel instructed his younger brother, Razeen Patel, to hide a box containing a firearm at a shop after the murder. Razeen testified that the accused threatened to kill him if he disclosed the murder to anyone,” Malabi added.

Razeen later reported both the threats and his brother’s confession to police. Forensic pathologist Dr Thakadu Mamashela told the court that Fatima Patel died from a gunshot wound to the head and had sustained several other injuries prior to her death. Investigators also recovered a cricket bat from the ceiling of the apartment, which became a crucial piece of evidence for the prosecution.

Court Rejects Mitigation, Cites Lack of Remorse

Patel had been out on R250,000 bail since 2015, while the case moved slowly through the courts. In mitigation of sentence, the defence called clinical psychologist Dr Lebogang Selahle, who recommended house arrest.

During cross-examination, however, Dr Selahle conceded that she was unaware Patel had already been convicted and acknowledged that this information could affect her professional recommendation.

“She also confirmed that she had not interviewed the children, who are currently in the care of their maternal grandmother and aunt. The accused did not testify in mitigation, and no evidence was led on his behalf by his current wife,” Malabi said.

Advocate Lethabo Mashiane, Limpopo’s Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, argued that the court should impose the harshest possible sentence. He described the murder as a stark example of femicide, reflecting South Africa’s ongoing gender-based violence crisis.

Presiding Judge Joseph Raulinga found that Patel showed no remorse and that there were no “substantial and compelling circumstances” to justify a lesser sentence.

“Rameez Patel was accordingly sentenced to life imprisonment for murder,” Malabi confirmed.

NPA Welcomes Life Sentence Amid GBV Crisis

The National Prosecuting Authority has welcomed the judgment. Limpopo Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Ivy Thenga, said that with gender-based violence declared a national disaster, the outcome of the case was a significant step towards accountability.

Thenga praised Advocate Mashiane and the Hawks investigation team, including Warrant Officer Abdul Wahab and Colonel Richard Boshomane, for their sustained commitment to securing justice.
