Ramaphosa To Deliver Eulogy At Late Ambassador Nathi Mthethwa’s Funeral

President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver the eulogy at the funeral of South Africa’s ambassador to France, Nathi Mthethwa, which is scheduled to take place in KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday.

Mthethwa has been accorded a Special Official Funeral Category 2, a status that includes ceremonial honours carried out by the South African Police Service (SAPS). The recognition is a move to recognise his many years of loyal service to the country in both government and diplomatic roles.

Investigation Continues into Nathi Mthethwa’s Death

The late ambassador passed away just over a week ago, reportedly from suicide. His body was discovered in the courtyard of the Hyatt Hotel in Paris after allegedly falling from the 22nd floor.

Both the South African Police Service and French authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.

Mthethwa’s remains arrived back in South Africa on Friday, following an official government memorial service held in Pretoria.

A moving ceremony took place at Durban’s King Shaka International Airport, where ANC leaders and supporters gathered to receive the ambassador’s casket, which was draped in the ANC flag.

Speaking on behalf of the African National Congress, National Spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri described the moment as one of deep sorrow, reflecting the immense loss felt within the movement.

“It is a deeply painful experience,” she said, acknowledging the late ambassador’s enduring impact and contribution to the nation.
