Ramaphosa Suspends Inspector-General Of Intelligence Imtiaz Fazel

President Cyril Ramaphosa has suspended the Inspector-General of Intelligence, Imtiaz Fazel, with immediate effect. The move comes as Parliament’s Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence (JSCI) launches an investigation into his conduct.

The President acted after being officially informed by the JSCI that a complaint had been lodged against Fazel, prompting a formal probe into the matter.

JSCI Confirms Complaint and Investigation

In a statement, the Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence confirmed it had received a complaint regarding the Inspector-General’s behaviour.

The committee also notified President Ramaphosa that it would conduct an investigation to determine the validity and seriousness of the allegations.

The details surrounding the complaint have not been disclosed, as the inquiry is still in progress.

“Section 7(5) of the Act provides that if the Inspector-General is the subject of an investigation by the (JSCI) in terms of subsection (4), he or she may be suspended by the President pending a decision in such investigation,” Magwenya stated.

Fazel will remain suspended until the parliamentary committee concludes its investigation and makes a determination on the matter.
