Ramaphosa Suspends Fannie Masemola, Appoints Puleng Dimpane As Acting National Police Commissioner

President Cyril Ramaphosa has placed National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola on precautionary suspension, appointing Major General Puleng Dimpane to step into the role in an acting capacity.

The announcement was made during a national address from the Union Buildings on Thursday, following Masemola’s recent court appearance on multiple charges.

Masemola appeared earlier this week facing four counts linked to alleged violations of the Public Finance Management Act, raising concerns about governance within the police service.

Ramaphosa Moves To Safeguard Public Trust In SAPS Leadership

Ramaphosa said the decision to suspend Masemola was taken to maintain confidence in public institutions, particularly within the South African Police Service.

“I have agreed with General Fannie Masemola that he should be placed on precautionary suspension,” said Ramaphosa.

He added that it was essential for the public to have trust in individuals appointed to key positions in government.

Court Proceedings Continue As Accountability Concerns Mount

Masemola is expected to return to the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court in May as legal proceedings continue.

The charges against him have intensified scrutiny over accountability and financial governance within SAPS leadership.

Authorities have not indicated how long the suspension will remain in place, but the acting appointment of Dimpane is expected to ensure continuity in police operations during the process.
