Ramaphosa Set For National Address As Phala Phala Pressure Mounts

President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to address the nation at 8pm on Monday following the landmark Constitutional Court ruling linked to the Section 89 impeachment proceedings over the Phala Phala scandal.

The national address will take place from the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

Ramaphosa is expected to announce a review of the report which found that he may have breached the Constitution in connection with the Phala Phala matter.

Constitutional Court Overturns Parliament’s 2022 Decision

The President’s address comes after the Constitutional Court of South Africa overturned Parliament’s decision taken on 13 December 2022 to block the Section 89 independent panel report from moving forward to a formal impeachment inquiry.

The ruling has reignited political pressure around the Phala Phala scandal and placed renewed focus on Ramaphosa’s future.

Phala Phala Panel Found Prima Facie Evidence Against Ramaphosa

The independent panel, chaired by former Chief Justice Sandile Ngcobo, previously found prima facie evidence suggesting that Ramaphosa may have violated the Constitution and committed serious misconduct.

The findings were linked to the 2020 theft of foreign currency from the President’s Phala Phala Farm game farm in Limpopo.
