Ramaphosa Hits Back: ‘My Family Never Benefited From Government Tenders’

President Cyril Ramaphosa has firmly denied that any of his family members have benefited from government tenders, following public speculation linking him to tender fraudster Hangwani Maumela.

Maumela, identified by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) as a central figure in a syndicate accused of looting over R2 billion through Tembisa Hospital tenders, recently made headlines after investigators raided his opulent Sandton mansion.

The raid uncovered several luxury cars and high-end items allegedly tied to the tender scheme.

During a media briefing in Pretoria on Monday, the Presidency addressed the ongoing rumours about Ramaphosa’s alleged connection to Maumela, which have circulated since the businessman’s name surfaced in corruption probes.

‘He’s Not Immediate Family,’ Says Presidency

Speculation grew after claims emerged suggesting Maumela was the president’s nephew. However, Ramaphosa clarified that while he was once married to Maumela’s aunt, the marriage ended in 1989.

Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya reiterated that Ramaphosa does not consider Maumela a family member.

“Just before the president was appointed the deputy president, he gathered his immediate family and relatives and sternly instructed all of them to either exit or stop any business that they did or intended to do with the government or any state institution,” Magwenya explained.

“Maumela was not part of that family gathering because he is not part of the president’s immediate family.”

Ramaphosa Ordered SIU Probe Into Tembisa Tender Irregularities

Magwenya further noted that Ramaphosa has consistently expressed concern about the alleged looting of Tembisa Hospital and emphasised his commitment to transparency.

The Presidency confirmed that the president was the one who signed the SIU proclamation to investigate procurement irregularities at the hospital — a move that shows his stated stance against corruption.
