Ramaphosa Denies Knowing Tembisa Hospital Looting Accused Hangwani Maumela, Calls Viral Video ‘Coincidental’

President Cyril Ramaphosa has rejected claims linking him to businessman Hangwani Maumela, who is accused of being at the centre of a R2 billion corruption scandal involving the Tembisa Hospital.
This comes after a video surfaced showing Ramaphosa standing outside Maumela’s luxury Sandton home, which was recently raided by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU). The President’s spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, said the video was “purely coincidental” and had nothing to do with Maumela.

“President Ramaphosa loves to walk whenever he finds time. He had invited Mr Sibiya for a walk. They passed a house which is now well known as Maumela’s house,” Magwenya explained. “While passing this house, they were stopped by Tbo Touch, who was in the company of Bishop Noel Jones. They took pictures, and there’s even a video.”
Magwenya added that Ramaphosa “did not know that the house belonged to Maumela” and that he “regularly walks and drives past the street as it’s close to his Hyde Park residence.”
SIU Seizes Luxury Cars and Property Worth Millions
The SIU raided Maumela’s Sandhurst mansion last week as part of efforts to recover assets linked to the alleged looting at Tembisa Hospital. Investigators believe Maumela led one of three major syndicates that siphoned off public healthcare funds through fraudulent tenders, inflated prices and fake deliveries.

Among the seized items were three Lamborghinis, designer furniture, expensive artwork, and other assets. The total value of preserved assets stands at R133.5 million, with an estimated R900 million targeted for recovery.
According to the SIU, Maumela allegedly used 41 companies to channel R820 million from Tembisa Hospital over two years. The broader investigation has uncovered more than R2 billion in misappropriated public funds.
Lavish Sandton Mansion Under Tight Security
Since the raid, Maumela’s mansion in Sandhurst, Sandton, has been heavily guarded. Security personnel wearing black shirts and jeans reportedly ordered anyone approaching the entrance to leave or “be assisted to leave.”

Sources said Maumela has not been seen at the property since Thursday’s SIU raid. Public records reveal that the residence—built on two merged plots worth R86 million—was purchased through the MHR Maumela Family Trust.
The three-storey home boasts multiple wings, infinity pools, manicured gardens, a car wash, and even a private hair salon. Neighbours describe the elite suburb as peaceful and crime-free, with several high-profile figures, including EFF leader Julius Malema, also residing in the area.
Magwenya emphasised that Ramaphosa has no personal or business relationship with Maumela, stating: “He is not related to him except that he was once married to Maumela’s aunt.” He added that before becoming Deputy President in 2014, Ramaphosa instructed his immediate family to withdraw from all government-related business dealings.
