Ramaphosa Appoints Advocate Tembeka Ngcukaitobi As Acting Constitutional Court Judge

President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Advocate Tembeka Ngcukaitobi SC as an Acting Justice of the Constitutional Court of South Africa.

He is expected to assume the role from 1 June 2026.

The appointment, understood to have been made on Thursday, has not yet been formally announced publicly.

Tembeka Ngcukaitobi Appointment: Distinguished Legal Career

Ngcukaitobi, 49, is regarded as one of the country’s leading legal minds, with experience spanning high-profile constitutional matters.

He joined the Johannesburg Bar in 2010 and was awarded senior counsel status in 2020.

His legal work has included involvement in proceedings linked to the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into State Capture, as well as participation in South Africa’s legal team at the International Court of Justice.

He has also been recognised for his work on land reform and constitutional law.

 Acting Term Set for 2026

Ngcukaitobi’s acting term is expected to run from June to November 2026.

His appointment follows recent additions to the court, including judges Nambitha Dambuza-Mayosi and Katharine Savage, contributing to a bench with a significant number of women.

Authorities have not yet provided further comment, with responses from the Presidency and the judiciary expected.
