RAF Expands Services To Rural KwaZulu-Natal To Improve Access And Road Safety

The Road Accident Fund (RAF) says there is an increasing need to extend its services to people living in remote areas of KwaZulu-Natal.

In collaboration with the Department of Transport, the RAF visited Jozini in northern KZN to enhance accessibility and assess the condition of local road infrastructure.

The visit forms part of a wider initiative to ensure that residents in rural and hard-to-reach communities can access essential RAF services without travelling long distances.

During the visit, the Department of Transport also conducted inspections of pothole repairs along the provincial road P552, ensuring that recent maintenance meets safety and quality standards.

Operation Vala Zonke Tackles Potholes Nationwide

The oversight visit forms part of the department’s ongoing Operation Vala Zonke programme—an initiative focused on repairing potholes across South Africa using labour-intensive methods to create jobs while improving road safety.

RAF representative Siphamandla Gumbi explained the significance of reaching rural residents:

“Communities are all rural communities and it’s very far for people to get to our offices in Durban. So we are trying by all means to make sure that they come to the area we reach all the communities.

“As you can see today up to so far we have seen about 300 people we have come to take their claims other two large claims we are also going to be doing settlements for people whose cases are being finalised two days.

“With an activity we are trying to do to reach as many people as possible. We are trying to make sure we meet far flung communities.”
