R2.8 Million Drug Bust: Crystal Meth And Dagga Seized At OR Tambo Cargo Warehouses

Gauteng police have confiscated drugs worth an estimated R2.8 million during two separate discoveries at cargo warehouses at OR Tambo International Airport.

The seizures were made during routine operations carried out by officers stationed at the airport, according to authorities.

Police say the narcotics were intercepted before they could reach their intended destinations.

Drugs Worth R2.2 Million Intercepted

Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the first discovery involved a large shipment of crystal meth.

The drugs, valued at about R2.2 million, were found at a cargo warehouse on Wednesday, 4 March.

“During routine day-to-day operations, police made the first discovery of crystal meth worth R2.2 million at a cargo warehouse on Wednesday, 4 March. The meth was destined for the Philippines from South Africa,” Mathe said.

Dagga Shipment From Morocco Seized

A second bust was made the following day at another cargo facility at the airport.

Authorities discovered eight large boxes filled with dagga, with an estimated street value of R672,000.

“The second drug bust was made at another cargo warehouse where eight large boxes containing dagga worth R672 000 was discovered on Thursday, 5 March. The dagga was shipped from Morocco and was destined for South Africa,” Mathe said.

All the drugs have been seized, and investigations are now underway to identify those responsible for the shipments.

Mathe confirmed that authorities are working to track down the traffickers involved in the movement of the narcotics.

“The drugs have been seized, and investigations are underway to track down the traffickers of the narcotics,” she added.

Police have not yet announced any arrests linked to the seizures.
