R2.6 Million Dagga Haul Seized In Limpopo As Suspects Flee Into Bush

Police in Limpopo are hunting for two suspects who abandoned a vehicle packed with dagga valued at an estimated R2.6 million before fleeing into nearby bushes.

The seizure followed a coordinated intelligence-driven operation along the R33 in the Waterberg district.

High-Speed Chase on R33 Ends in Major Dagga Seizure

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), members of the Waterberg district police, Waterberg rural safety units and private security companies acted on intelligence about three vehicles suspected of transporting dagga from Gauteng towards Modimolle on 14 February.

The vehicles — a white Toyota Fortuner and two Toyota Hilux GD6 bakkies — were spotted travelling at high speed in Vaalwater.

Regional police spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba said officers attempted to stop the convoy, but the drivers sped off.

“A lookout was activated with the assistance of the private security companies and a Toyota Hilux bakkie was intercepted. Unfortunately, the suspects left the vehicle and ran into the bushes on foot,” Ledwaba said.

Officers searched the abandoned bakkie and discovered eight bags of dagga with an estimated street value of R2.6 million.

The vehicle has been seized for further investigation.

Police Commissioner Praises Joint Operation

Thembi Hadebe, Limpopo provincial police commissioner, commended the cooperation between police, rural safety structures and private security teams.

“The working together between police and other disciplines, is always helpful in assisting police to curb and investigate any form of criminality,” Hadebe said.

She also urged community members to continue assisting law enforcement.
