Putco Bus Depots Targeted In Suspected Arson Attacks, 50 Buses Burned

The Public Utility Transport Corporation (Putco) has reported a series of violent arson attacks across four depots in Mpumalanga, resulting in 50 buses being destroyed and two employees injured.

Details of the Incident

According to Putco spokesperson Lindokuhle Xulu, the attacks began on Monday evening, January 27, 2025, at the Moloto depot.

“An unknown group of assailants ambushed and restrained security personnel before setting buses alight and opening fire within the depot,” Xulu stated.

Two employees were injured during the assault. One was shot in the leg, and the other sustained head injuries after being struck with a chair.

The violence spread overnight to additional depots in Wolwekraal, Siyabuswa, and Vaalbank, where buses were also set on fire. In total, 50 buses were destroyed.

Continued Operations Amid Chaos

Despite the damage, Putco has confirmed that its buses are still operational in the affected areas, albeit under increased security measures.

“Putco’s buses are continuing to provide service in these volatile areas under heightened supervision,” said Xulu.

The company is working closely with law enforcement authorities, who are conducting investigations into the attacks.

While the motive behind the attacks remains unclear, authorities are treating the incidents as a coordinated arson attack.

No arrests have been reported yet. The injured employees are receiving medical treatment, and Putco has expressed concern over the safety of its workers and assets.
