Public Invited To Submit Views As Parliament Probes Alleged Police Corruption

Members of the public will be given a platform to present submissions before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee investigating allegations of police corruption on Tuesday.

This development follows months of testimony from multiple witnesses who detailed claims of corruption and alleged political interference, including accusations involving Minister on special leave Senzo Mchunu.

The committee’s next phase will also hear from key civil society organisations, as lawmakers broaden the scope of input ahead of final deliberations.

Public Submissions Open in Police Corruption Inquiry

According to the committee’s agreed terms of reference, public participation is a central component of the process. Members of the public are encouraged to share their views on how police corruption should be addressed.

However, the committee has stressed that all submissions must directly relate to the agreed terms of reference guiding the inquiry.

Civil Society and Experts to Address Parliament

The first public submission will be delivered by Advocate Paul Hoffman of Accountability Now, who is expected to outline recommendations aimed at strengthening South Africa’s fight against corruption.

He will be followed by the African Policing Civilian Oversight Forum, with the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) scheduled to present its submission later in the afternoon. Gun Free South Africa is also among the organisations set to make inputs.

Whistleblower Patricia Mashale is also expected to make a submission, adding to the range of perspectives that the committee will consider as it examines allegations within the police service.

The hearings mark a significant moment in the inquiry, as Parliament opens the floor to public and expert voices on an issue that continues to erode trust in law enforcement.
