The Ethiopian national is facing multiple charges, including rape, after allegedly abusing a six-year-old girl at Arnot, near Hendrina.

The incident, which reportedly occurred when the young girl was sent to buy items from a local tuckshop, has sparked widespread outrage in the community.

Community Takes To The Streets

Enraged community members took to the streets, forcing foreign spaza shop operators to pack up and leave the area.

The spaza shops have remained closed following a community meeting, where residents expressed their frustration and concern over the incident.

The accused Ethiopian national also faces charges for contravening South Africa’s Immigration Act.

Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli confirmed the incident and subsequent arrest, assuring the public that the rape matter involving the Ethiopian national will betaken seriously.

Mdluli noted the need for effective community engagement and social impact assessment to prevent such incidents and address concerns promptly.
