Proteas March Into Champions Trophy Semis After Crushing England

The Proteas are just two wins away from breaking their 27-year trophy drought after a dominant seven-wicket victory over England in the Champions Trophy. While all-rounder Marco Jansen insists the team won’t alter their approach, he acknowledges they need to be at their best in the upcoming semifinals.

South Africa finished at the top of Group B after rolling England for 179 in Karachi on Saturday. Jansen (3/39) and Wiaan Mulder (3/25) spearheaded the attack, while Rassie van der Dussen (72* off 87 balls) and Heinrich Klaasen (64 off 56) ensured a comfortable chase, securing victory with more than 20 overs to spare.

“It was a good team performance all in all,” said 24-year-old Jansen, who dismantled England’s top order and earned the Player of the Match award.

Next Stop: The Semifinals

The Proteas’ next opponent will be determined by the final Group A clash between India and New Zealand on Sunday. South Africa will face either India in Dubai on Tuesday or New Zealand in Lahore on Wednesday.

Taking a proactive approach, the team has already left for Dubai to avoid last-minute travel disruptions if they are scheduled to play India.

Despite the looming high-stakes matches, Jansen insists the squad won’t veer from their strategy. “I wouldn’t say the mindset changes. It’s just the occasion that’s probably a bit more hyped up,” he explained.

“You have your processes, your guides going into every match, and in semifinals, you just try and do that extraordinarily well. For me, it’s about adapting to the pitch and conditions, figuring out what works and what doesn’t.”

Injury Concerns for Proteas Leadership

South Africa faced England without captain Temba Bavuma, who was sidelined due to illness. Stand-in skipper Aiden Markram also struggled with a hamstring niggle, forcing Klaasen to take charge for most of the match.

Jansen remains uncertain about their availability for the semifinals. “I’m not exactly clued up on how they’re feeling at the moment,” he admitted.

If Bavuma and Markram remain unavailable, the Proteas will have to navigate the knockouts with a reshuffled leadership setup. Regardless, their unbeaten group stage run (excluding a rained-out match) has built strong momentum heading into the playoffs.

With confidence running high and the team firing on all cylinders, South Africa is within touching distance of ending their long wait for an ICC trophy.
