Pretoria Man Gets Three Life Sentences For Raping Young Nieces

A 47-year-old man from Mamelodi will spend the rest of his life behind bars after the Pretoria High Court sentenced him to three life terms for rape. The court found him guilty of systematically raping three of his nieces, who were between six and nine years old at the time.

The man’s arrest in 2022 followed a harrowing period of abuse where he exploited his familial access to the children. The court heard that the victims lived with their uncle and two older siblings in homes in Mamelodi and Nellamphius.

He used the cover of night, waiting for the households to sleep, to commit his crimes. The perpetrator would then take the girls from their bedroom and rape them in the living room.

How an Outreach Programme Led to Justice

The devastating pattern of abuse only came to light after the children attended an educational outreach programme on sexual offences in 2022. Empowered by the information from the programme, the young victims found the courage to report their uncle, leading directly to his arrest.

The court meticulously examined the horrific details of the case before reaching its final verdict.

Court Condemns “Ruthless” Offender

In handing down the sentence, the magistrate left no room for leniency. The court emphasized the gravity of the crimes and the profound breach of trust.

The magistrate stated the accused is a ruthless man and that there are no compelling circumstances to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentences. This ruling underscores the judiciary’s strict stance on such severe violations, particularly those involving vulnerable children within family settings.

The three life sentences will run concurrently, ensuring the offender remains incarcerated for the duration of his natural life.
