President Ramaphosa Meets Pope Leo XIV For The First Time In Rome

President Cyril Ramaphosa held his first official meeting with newly appointed Pope Leo XIV in Rome on Friday, marking a significant moment in South Africa’s diplomatic engagement with the Holy See.

According to the Presidency, Ramaphosa arrived in Italy earlier in the day for bilateral discussions aimed at reinforcing cooperation on pressing global issues.

The President said the talks would focus on key areas including climate justice, peace-building initiatives, and strengthening partnerships in humanitarian and emergency relief efforts.

Strengthening Diplomatic and Humanitarian Cooperation

Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya confirmed that Ramaphosa was accompanied by his daughter, Keneilwe Ramaphosa, and Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola.

“South Africa and the Holy See have cordial bilateral relations, and the visit by President Ramaphosa serves as an opportunity to discuss a renewed focus on collaboration in humanitarian aid, climate justice, emergency response, and peace building,” said Magwenya.

Magwenya highlighted the significance of this diplomatic encounter.

“The meeting with His Holiness Pope Leo XIV is of particular significance as it represents South Africa’s first high-level engagement with the newly-appointed pontiff.

“His ascension to the papacy on 8 May 2025 provides an important opportunity to reaffirm and strengthen bilateral relations with the Holy See,” he added.
