Preschool Teacher Convicted Of Murder And Rape Of 4-Year-Old Stepdaughter In Johannesburg

The High Court of South Africa has convicted preschool teacher Amber Lee Hughes (25) of the premeditated murder of her 4-year-old learner and stepdaughter, Nada-Jane Challita. The verdict was delivered on 27 August 2025, concluding a harrowing trial.

Hughes initially pleaded not guilty but later submitted supplementary admissions. She confessed to drowning the child following an emotional dispute with the child’s father over his infidelity.

While she cited her Borderline Personality Disorder, she acknowledged full awareness of her actions and detailed multiple failed suicide attempts afterwards.

Court Reaches a Rape Conviction For the Teacher

Despite her murder confession, Hughes denied the rape charges, claiming ignorance of how the child sustained vaginal injuries. The court, however, ruled differently. It found that while the state failed to prove anal penetration, there was sufficient evidence for vaginal rape.

A pathologist’s testimony confirmed a fresh wound on the child’s private area, indicating penetration by a small object minutes to hours before death.

The court deemed the expert witness credible and, given Hughes’ admission of being alone with the child at the time of death, concluded she was responsible for the injuries.

With the guilty verdict delivered, the case has been postponed to 27 October 2025 for pre-sentencing proceedings. The court will then hear arguments in mitigation and aggravation of sentence before determining Hughes’s fate.
