Pregnant Woman And 11-Year-Old Son Murdered In Pietermaritzburg

A three-month pregnant woman and her 11-year-old son were murdered in their home in Glenwood, Pietermaritzburg, on Sunday morning.

The tragic incident coincided with the start of South Africa’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), emphasising the urgent need to combat violence against women and children.

Details of Murder

KwaZulu-Natal police confirmed that the 34-year-old woman and her stepson were shot and killed by unidentified suspects who stormed their home on Abarian Drive. Upon arrival, police discovered the bodies of the victims.

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda explained that the husband of the deceased informed authorities he was alerted to gunshots at the house.

“When he arrived, he found the body of his wife lying in a pool of blood in the kitchen. His stepson had also been shot and killed in his bedroom,” said Netshiunda.

The couple’s six-year-old biological son was the sole survivor, found unharmed in his room. The Mountain Rise Police Station has opened two murder cases, and investigations are ongoing.

While the motive for the killings remains unclear, authorities have launched a manhunt for the suspects involved.

Alarming GBV Statistics

This heinous act comes as South Africa grapples with high levels of violence against women and children. According to the latest crime statistics from the South African Police Services, nearly 1,000 women were murdered in just three months.

On Monday, President Cyril Ramaphosa urged society to dismantle patriarchal systems that enable violence and inequality. Parliament also called for greater male participation in challenging harmful norms and behaviours that perpetuate GBV.
