Potchefstroom Man Sentenced To Two Life Terms For Raping Girlfriend

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of North West, Major General Dintletse Molefe, has welcomed the two life terms handed down by the Potchefstroom Regional Court to 40-year-old rape convict, Elias Tsetla. The sentencing was delivered on Tuesday, 23 September 2025.
Tsetla was found guilty of raping his girlfriend in January 2023 at Ikageng Location, Potchefstroom. The case was investigated by the Potchefstroom Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, which arrested him three days after the crime was reported.
Details of the Brutal Attack in Potchefstroom
Court evidence revealed that the victim, then 28 years old, returned home on the day of the incident and was accused by her boyfriend of having affairs with other men. The confrontation escalated, leading to a violent assault during which Tsetla raped her twice.
Despite pleading not guilty, he was convicted and sentenced to two life terms behind bars.

Further investigations found that Tsetla, originally from Lesotho, could not provide proof of his legal status in South Africa. As a result, he was additionally charged under the Immigration Act, 2002.
The court ordered that he either pay a R3,000 fine or serve three months in prison for the immigration violation. Tsetla has been in custody since his arrest in January 2023.
