Possible Tornado Hits Randfontein, Extensive Damage Reported

Parts of Randfontein were left reeling on Wednesday afternoon following a severe storm, with early reports suggesting a possible tornado caused widespread destruction. Emergency services have been deployed to the affected areas to assist with recovery efforts.

The Gauteng Provincial Joint Operations Centre (JOC) confirmed the incident, stating: “Extensive damage has been reported, and emergency services are assisting. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) will provide further details.”

Weather Warnings Amid Randfontein Tornado

The SAWS had earlier issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms in Gauteng and Mpumalanga. The storms were anticipated to bring heavy downpours, strong winds, and hail.

SAWS spokespersons noted: “Thunderstorms are expected to develop over the southern parts of Gauteng and the southern highveld of Mpumalanga. These storms could result in large amounts of small hail, with isolated areas experiencing larger hail.”

With weather warnings in place until 8 PM, the JOC advised residents to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. Emergency responders continue to monitor the situation closely, with updates expected from weather authorities.
