Former President Jacob Zuma’s detention will be decided soon by the National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Makgothi Samuel Thobakgale.
The country was on pins and needles on Thursday as the decision was scheduled to be announced, but within a few minutes to midnight, Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo issued a statement announcing a decision on Zuma’s detention had been made.

Ronald Lamola, Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, will join Thobakgale at the Friday morning media briefing from Pretoria.
While the nation awaited the announcement on Thursday, a social media account in the name of the former president’s son Duduzane Zuma responded to a media outlet’s piece titled “Will Zuma be sent back to jail?” on the social networking platform X (previously Twitter).
By 5:30 pm, the account posted “Hell will break loose, my father is not going to jail.”
However, SurgeZirc SA contacted a close friend of Duduzane Zuma for comment and he stated clearly that the comment was not posted by Duduzane.
“Duduzane Zuma did not post that comment and will not post it. Thank you for contacting us for confirmation before sharing,” the source said.
