The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the City of Johannesburg has committed to holding the metro’s new leadership, under new Mayor Dada Morero, accountable.
Recently, the DA’s candidate, Belinda Kayser-Echeonzonjoku, was defeated by the African National Congress (ANC) candidate. Morero was elected the city’s new mayor with 189 votes, while the DA received just 60 votes.
In an attempt to allow for fresh elections, the DA tabled a motion calling for the dissolution of the council.

However, the party failed to garner the necessary support to make this happen. Kayser-Echeonzonjoku has accused those who backed Morero of prioritizing positions in the governing coalition over the interests of the city’s residents.
Kayser-Echeonzonjoku pointed out that several parties, including ActionSA, Economic Freedom Fighters, and Patriotic Alliance, among others, supported the ANC against the DA candidate.
She expressed disappointment, noting that these parties could have aligned with the DA’s track record of service delivery, good governance, and accountability.
Kayser-Echeonzonjoku lamented that Friday night’s events have solidified concerns over the decline in the metro, especially regarding the state of service delivery.
As such, the DA vows to rigorously monitor the new leadership and hold them accountable for their actions to ensure that the needs of Johannesburg residents are met.
