President Cyril Ramaphosa has officially fired advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane, only one month before her time as Public Protector ends.
On Monday, 79.5% of the National Assembly backed the section 194 committee’s findings that Mkhwebane was incompetent and guilty of wrongdoing, and so unable to serve as the head of South Africa’s watchdog.

In a letter to Mkhwebane, Ramaphosa stated that the Constitution requires him to remove the Public Protector after the section 194 process is completed.
“I therefore hereby inform you that you are hereby removed from the Office of the Public Protector in terms of section 194(3)(b) of the Constitution on the grounds of misconduct and incompetence,” the president said.
Mkhwebane shared Ramaphosa’s letter online on Wednesday morning, saying: “This injustice, sadly perpetrated on Steve Biko Day, will be legally challenged in review proceedings.
