An unspecified number of Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers have been suspended in connection to the death of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) councillor Moshe Mphahlele.
Mphahlele was fatally shot during a protest in Bramley, near Alexandra, Johannesburg, on Sunday. The EFF in Gauteng reported that Mphahlele was participating in a ‘peaceful service delivery programme’ advocating for social housing at the time of the incident.
The circumstances surrounding the death of Moshe Mphahlele are under investigation by the South African Police Service (SAPS). Addressing the press on Thursday, City of Joburg’s Public Safety MMC, Mgcini Tshwaku, provided an update on the ongoing investigations.
Tshwaku indicated that Mphahlele bled to death after being shot with rubber bullets and live ammunition. Further revelations included the shooting of a 16-year-old boy at close range, who, despite serious injuries, survived.

MMC Tshwaku confirmed the precautionary suspension of JMPD officers, although the exact number remains undisclosed. The officers involved have relinquished their firearms to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) for ballistic testing.
Tshwaku emphasised that determining the origin of the shots is crucial, especially given conflicting statements regarding community members allegedly firing at the police.
The EFF has strongly condemned the killing, describing Mphahlele as a devoted community activist passionate about enhancing the living conditions in Johannesburg and Alexandra.
A memorial service was held at the Sankopano Community Centre in Alexandra on Wednesday, attended by notable figures such as EFF Deputy President Floyd Shivambu and Joburg Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda.
The party pledged to ensure those responsible for Mphahlele’s death are held accountable and called for calm and discipline among their members and the public during this period of seeking justice.
