In a recent development that has stirred political circles, the Umkhonto Wesizwe Party (MK) led by former President Jacob Zuma has once again fired Arthur Zwane from the position of Secretary-General. This incident marks the second termination in less than a month after Zwane was briefly reinstated to his post.
Zwane’s tenure has been tumultuous, having first been dismissed along with Treasury General Danisa Zulu earlier last month. Zwane initially replaced former Secretary-General Sihle Ngubane, who had been deployed to parliament.

Despite his reappointment, Zwane’s position remained precarious, culminating in another firing following allegations of misleading the party.
In a letter directed to Zwane, Jacob Zuma clearly articulated his reasons for the dismissal, though specifics were conspicuously absent.
The letter read: “I refer to the letter I wrote to you on June 28 in which I, Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma, as president of the Umkhonto Wesizwe Party (MKP) expressed my decision to you to relieve you from the position of secretary-general of the party.
“I therefore reconfirm my earlier decision to you and thus expect you to cooperate fully with my decision and desist from continuing to serve in this capacity. Furthermore, owing to your conduct of misleading the party, I reserve the right to expel you from the party with immediate effect.”
Adding to the controversy, Zwane himself had resigned three weeks after his initial reinstatement, citing an inability to handle the workload. However, Zuma allegedly rejected his resignation. Zwane’s resignation letter stated, “In the last 2 weeks, I have realised that the volume of work in my office is huge and beyond my limits, especially because I have other competing business interests that I’m pursuing.”
Despite Zwane’s stated reasons, it was later revealed that his resignation was a direct result of his pending expulsion from the party, casting a shadow over the credibility of his claims.
These repeated firings have raised questions about the internal stability of the Umkhonto Wesizwe Party. The lack of transparency surrounding the reasons for these decisions adds another layer of complexity.
As the party navigates through these challenging times, the leadership will need to address these issues promptly to maintain credibility and unity within its ranks.
