The African National Congress (ANC) has formally severed ties with former President Jacob Zuma after he missed the 21-day deadline to appeal his recent expulsion from the party. The ANC’s National Disciplinary Committee (NDC) resolved to expel Zuma following a disciplinary hearing held in his absence on July 23.
As announced by ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula, the period for Zuma to challenge his expulsion has elapsed.

ANC Veterans League President Snuki Zikalala emphasized that Zuma’s expulsion marks a ‘chapter of renewal’ for the party.
He stated, ‘This chapter is a chapter of renewal saying that those who are undermining the organization, using the organization as a stepping stone to ensure that they divide the organization, they have no place in the organization itself.’
Zikalala further described Zuma’s activities as ‘counter-revolutionary.’ He elaborated that the formation of the Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party by Zuma was detrimental to the ANC.

The ANC accused Zuma of contravening Rule 25 of the party’s constitution due to his actions in forming the MK party in December last year. Zuma’s refusal to campaign or vote for the ANC was deemed a breach of this rule. A leaked document dated July 29 detailed that Zuma was dismissed by ANC’s acting NDC member Enver Surty.
While Zuma has now aligned himself with the MK party, he had previously stated that he would ‘die in the ANC.’
In May, Zuma expressed his lifelong commitment to the ANC, recalling his time in prison and exile in service of the party. Nevertheless, Zuma is expected to address the media on Thursday regarding the current political scenario in South Africa and discuss broad strategic issues.
