The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have recently criticized South Africa’s inadequate border and harbour controls, as well as the corruption among some officials, in light of significant drug busts across the nation. Recent incidents underscore the severity of the issue.
On Tuesday, a drug mule was apprehended at OR Tambo International Airport following his arrival from Brazil. Acting on a tip-off, police discovered cocaine valued at R1 million in the aircraft’s toilet.

Additionally, a clandestine drug lab worth R2 billion was dismantled in Limpopo, leading to the arrest of two Mexican nationals and three other suspects. In the Western Cape, authorities seized cocaine worth R252 million during a roadblock in Stillbaai, where a Russian national was among the arrested suspects.
Further, police have seized R40 million worth of dagga in Magaliesburg, Gauteng, and crystal meth valued at R300 million in Fourways, Johannesburg. Between May and June, drugs worth R12 million were confiscated in Mpumalanga, including dagga, cocaine, and crystal meth.
According to National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola, drugs worth R2 billion have been destroyed in the past twelve months, encompassing substances such as cocaine, crystal meth, and unregistered medicines. Despite these efforts, the EFF remains critical of current strategies.

In a statement, the EFF condemned lax border controls and corruption, describing the drug trade in South Africa as a multi-billion rand enterprise that undermines the country’s future. The EFF stressed the importance of reallocating the budget to address crime prevention effectively and articulated the need for strategic intervention based on readily available data.
The party has vowed to continue pressuring Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu to present a comprehensive plan to combat illegal drug manufacturing and imports. The EFF demands decisive and bold actions to dismantle the drug syndicates that threaten the nation’s well-being.
