The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), South Africa’s third-largest political party, celebrated a significant milestone on Wednesday, marking its 10th anniversary with a poignant tribute to their roots in Marikana, North West province.
At the heart of the commemorations was the Marikana Koppies, the very site where the EFF was conceived. The occasion carried special significance as it coincided with the 11th anniversary of the tragic Marikana massacre, an event etched in the nation’s memory.

The massacre occurred on August 16, 2012, when 34 miners lost their lives during a violent clash with police officers while participating in a wildcat strike at the Lonmin platinum mine.
Julius Malema, the EFF’s Commander-in-Chief, shared the emotional tale of how the party came into existence. Following the massacre, Malema, along with EFF deputy president Floyd Shivambu and others, visited the surviving miners and the families of the fallen victims.
In their grief and desperation for change, the miners implored them to establish a political party that would provide an alternative to the ruling ANC, which they believed had lost its way.
Responding to the miners’ impassioned plea, the EFF was born. The party vowed to become a militant and radical force, dedicated to defending the downtrodden masses of the people, with the Marikana tragedy serving as a somber reminder of the injustices that inspired their formation.
In the lead-up to their 10th-anniversary celebrations, the EFF organized a series of events, including a carnival, public lecture, and exhibition at Uncle Toms Hall in Soweto, along with numerous walkabouts.
However, their commemoration in Marikana took on a more spiritual tone. In a solemn tribute, the EFF performed traditional rituals, symbolizing their respect and sacrifice to honor those who perished in the Marikana massacre.
Cows were slaughtered, and traditional beer was prepared, offering a spiritual connection to the deceased. This act was intended to bring forth the spirits of the fallen, seeking their guidance and wisdom in the battles that lie ahead.

The EFF expressed their determination to ensure that the sacrifices made by the victims were not in vain. Looking ahead, the EFF has planned a grand finale to their 10-year celebrations.
The massive rally will be held at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, with a capacity of 95,000 attendees.The rally promises to be a vibrant expression of the party’s existence and its unwavering commitment to its cause.
