KwaZulu-Natal Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube has reported that at least 16 people were injured in a recent clash between supporters of the African National Congress (ANC) and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).
The incident occurred during an event in Kwanongoma on Saturday, where the IFP accused the governing party of disrespecting Zulu King Misuzulu Kazwelithini.
During the event, ANC Provincial Chairperson Siboniso Duma interrupted Zulu Prime Minister Thulasizwe Buthelezi’s speech, sparking tensions between the two rival parties. The clash highlights the intense competition for control of KwaZulu-Natal in the upcoming elections.
Reports indicate that women and children were among those injured during the altercation between supporters after the event. One woman, aged 37, suffered severe beatings and sustained head injuries.
Premier Dube-Ncube has called for calm in the province, urging political parties and their supporters to practice tolerance.
