The African National Congress (ANC) in Johannesburg has announced plans to recall the city’s executive mayor, Kabelo Gwamanda of the Al Jama-ah party.
This significant development arises amidst criticisms from various civil organisations focusing on Gwamanda’s performance, particularly in basic service delivery and imposing an R200 surcharge for pre-paid electricity customers.
Civil organisations have voiced strong critiques regarding Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda’s handling of essential services within Johannesburg.

The introduction of a R200 surcharge for pre-paid electricity customers has particularly drawn public ire. This surcharge has been perceived as an additional financial burden on residents already grappling with economic challenges.
Despite last week’s statement from Al Jama-ah leader Ganief Hendricks that Gwamanda would not step down, recent developments indicate otherwise.
ANC Johannesburg spokesperson Masilo Serekele confirmed that the party has finalized engagements with coalition partners, including Al Jama-ah.
They have agreed that Kabelo Gwamanda will vacate his position at a forthcoming time, allowing the ANC to assume the mayorship.
Serekele elaborated on the complexities of these political engagements, noting that the negotiations involve serious ‘back and forth’ discussions.
The ANC remains optimistic that an agreement will be concluded within the next few days, marking a pivotal shift in Johannesburg’s political landscape.
