DA Calls For Alcohol And Cigarettes Ban To Be Lifted

The official opposition party Democratic Alliance (DA) is calling for the ban on the sale of alcohol and cigarettes to be unbanned with immediate effect.

The calling follows the stance a week ago, when the President of the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) Glenda Gray made comments that government now needs to reconsider lifts as what was needed has been achieved.

However, the opposition party alluded that ban has harmed businesses and workers in the alcohol and cigarette sectors.

The DA said now needs to be discarded to prioritise livelihoods.

The party’s Dean McPherson said unbanning the ban on the sale of alcohol and cigarettes will give credence to government’s assertion.

In addtion, assertion that the decisions of the national coronavirus command council are guided by scientific stance.

“The ban on tobacco and alcohol have had devastating consequences for hundreds of thousands of people who have lost their jobs in those industries,” said DA.

McPherson said lifting the ban will also fights the illicit trade market.

“We cannot allow cigarette smugglers to continue to enrich themselves, while South Africans are criminalised for buying cigarettes.”

The DA alluded that South Africa has lost billions of rands in revenue and taxes, which it will be hard to recover.
