Explosive Raid: Police Storm Homes Of Controversial Businessman Calvin Mathibeli in Tender Fraud Probe

Police have carried out coordinated raids on several properties linked to controversial businessman Calvin Mathibeli, seizing documents and electronic equipment as part of an ongoing investigation.

Officers descended on the businessman’s residence in Durban North on Tuesday, where investigators collected various items believed to be relevant to the probe.

Multiple police vehicles, including units with heavily armed tactical officers, were seen stationed outside the property during the operation.

Authorities confirmed that the searches were conducted under warrants linked to a tender fraud case registered in Johannesburg.

Tender documents and laptops seized during police investigation

During the raid, investigators removed several items from the property, including tender-related documents and laptops.

These materials are expected to assist the police team as they examine whether multimillion-rand contracts with government departments were obtained fraudulently by companies connected to the Calvin and Family Group.

Officials on the scene were seen loading evidence bags into unmarked vehicles before leaving the premises, signalling the end of that stage of the search.

The investigation remains ongoing and authorities are still analysing the seized materials.

Court order previously forced Mathibeli to retract claims

The police action follows a recent court ruling involving the 37-year-old businessman.

Mathibeli had been ordered by the Durban High Court to retract statements he made about KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, in which he alleged that the commissioner was corrupt.

Mathibeli is the founder and CEO of the Calvin and Family Group, a company that has operated for more than 19 years and reportedly oversees about 10 subsidiary businesses.

Police have indicated that the items recovered during the searches will form part of the evidence being reviewed as the tender fraud investigation continues.

Authorities have described the case as a developing story, with more updates expected as the investigation progresses.
