Police Station Commander Arrested For Theft, Fraud

Colonel Logan Govender, the station commander of Norwood police station in Gauteng, was arrested on Tuesday, 18 March 2025, by the Gauteng Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit.

The charges against Govender include theft, fraud, and defeating the ends of justice.

The arrest stems from an alleged incident in 2020, in which he is accused of orchestrating the illegal confiscation of goods worth R165,000.

Bogus Confiscation Operation Unravels

The incident that led to Colonel Govender’s arrest dates back to 21 August 2020, when he allegedly coordinated a fraudulent operation to seize stock from a shop.

According to police reports, Govender approached the shop owner with a civilian accomplice, Oelof Abraham Du Plooy, who posed as an expert in illicit cigarettes from the Adams and Adams company.

The duo falsely claimed to have received a tip-off from the Crime Intelligence unit about the sale of illicit substances at the shop.

They proceeded with a search of the premises, which led to the confiscation of Al Fakher molasses flavours worth R165,000.

However, no formal criminal charges were made against the shop owner, and no arrest was made during the operation.

Instead, the confiscated goods were taken to SAPS Johannesburg Central, where they were handed over to Du Plooy for “laboratory testing,” as claimed.

Shop Owner Discovers The Deception

The plot began to unravel the following day when the shop owner, concerned about the confiscated goods, visited the police station only to find that the goods were no longer there.

Upon further investigation, the shop owner discovered that Du Plooy was not affiliated with the Adams and Adams company, and his actions were fraudulent.

Realizing that he had been duped, the shop owner filed a case with the authorities, which prompted the Gauteng Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit to take over the investigation.

The evidence was presented to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), who authorized charges against both Govender and Du Plooy.

Govender Released On Bail, Case Adjourned To May

 

Colonel Govender was arrested during a work meeting in Protea, Soweto, where officers from the Anti-Corruption Unit executed the warrant.

After his arrest, he appeared before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court, and was granted bail set at R3,000.

The case has been remanded to 29 May 2025 for further proceedings.
