KZN Police Sergeant Killed In Inanda Crash, Service Firearm Reported Stolen

A KwaZulu-Natal police sergeant lost his life in a collision in Inanda on Saturday afternoon, with his state-issued firearm allegedly stolen from the scene.

The accident occurred along Jabu Ngcobo Road in Tea Estate, where two vehicles — a blue Hyundai i20 and a grey Volvo S40 — collided. According to security company Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the impact forced the officer’s Hyundai off the road and into nearby sugarcane fields.

The deceased officer, who was in uniform at the time of the crash, has been identified as a sergeant stationed at King Shaka International Airport (KSIA).

The two female passengers in the Volvo sustained injuries, with one suffering a fractured hand. Both received medical attention from a private ambulance service.

Firearm Theft Allegations

While emergency responders attended to the scene, witnesses alleged that the officer’s 9mm Beretta pistol (serial number P89936Z) was stolen from his vehicle before first responders arrived.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing two individuals reaching into the police sergeant’s vehicle and later walking toward a white VW Caddy.

RUSA confirmed that it has supplied police investigators with both body cam and dash cam footage, which captured the scene, surrounding bystanders, and vehicles leaving the area.

The footage will now form part of the police investigation into the reported theft.
