Police Sergeant Arrested After R1,000 Soliciting Bribe
Police Sergeant Xolani Sibiya, attached to Whiteriver SAPS, was arrested last week by the Hawks for allegedly soliciting a R1,000 bribe from a theft suspect. He appeared in the Whiteriver Magistrate’s Court for his formal bail application and was granted R2,000 bail.
The case has been postponed to 26 November 2025 for further investigation, Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Magonseni Nkosi confirmed.
Strict Bail Conditions in Place for Police Sergeant
The court imposed strict conditions to safeguard the ongoing investigation. Sibiya is prohibited from contacting the witnesses directly or indirectly.
The arrest followed allegations that the sergeant tried to mislead a theft suspect, claiming he could influence the prosecutor to withdraw charges in exchange for money.

The suspect immediately reported the matter to the Hawks, leading to Sibiya’s apprehension at his workplace.
Major General Nico Gerber, provincial head of the Hawks in Mpumalanga, condemned the alleged actions, stating the investigation would be “conducted without fear or favour.”
