A routine Friday night stop turned into a massive drugs haul when police in Groblershoop, Northern Cape, nabbed a suspected dealer carrying narcotics worth nearly R2 million.

Inside a bucket filled with rice, police discovered mandrax tablets worth an eye-watering R1.3 million. The search intensified, leading to yet another stash hidden in secret compartments.

According to police spokesperson Sergeant Omphile Masegela, the officers uncovered tik valued at R293 916 and dagga valued at R179 625, all cleverly concealed in the vehicle. The drugs were immediately seized and the vehicle impounded.

In a separate incident on Saturday morning, Mpumalanga police arrested a 41-year-old man found standing suspiciously along the N4 near Kaapmuiden.

After receiving a tip-off, a officer searched the man’s bag and discovered two books wrapped in decorative paper.

Hidden inside were white compressed substances, later confirmed as crystal meth worth around R350 000.

The suspect reportedly told police he was homeless and from Springs, claiming someone picked him off the street, handed him the package, and ordered him to deliver it to Mozambique before allegedly being sent on to Brazil.

He is expected to appear in the Barberton Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
