Police Return To Saldanha Bay As Fresh Leads Surface In Joshlin Smith Case

Western Cape police have once again deployed teams to Saldanha Bay following the emergence of new information linked to the disappearance of six-year-old Joshlin Smith.

Officers, accompanied by K9 units, were seen combing through sand dunes in the coastal area as part of the latest search efforts. The renewed activity comes amid ongoing attempts to uncover any evidence that could shed light on the young girl’s whereabouts.

The latest development follows claims by Reverend June Dolly, who shared on social media that she possesses evidence relating to Joshlin’s disappearance. She alleged, however, that authorities had not taken her claims seriously.

New Leads Prompt Police Search In Saldanha Bay

The South African Police Service confirmed that detectives were dispatched to the small fishing town to assess information brought forward by a community member.

Western Cape police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut said investigators were acting on the latest claims but had yet to uncover concrete evidence.

“At this stage, no tangible evidence linked to Joshlin Smith has been found. However, SAPS reiterates that all information received is treated with seriousness and thoroughly investigated,” Traut said.

He added that since Joshlin vanished, numerous tips from the public had been examined. “All information is rigorously assessed for credibility and evidential value, but unfortunately, none has yielded a breakthrough.”

Investigation Remains Active Despite Convictions

Authorities stressed that the case remains open, even after key convictions were secured.

“The investigation into Joshlin Smith’s disappearance remains open and active, despite the sentencing of three accused in May 2024. Detectives continue to follow up on all information, with extensive efforts undertaken both locally and abroad,” Traut said.

In 2025, Joshlin’s mother, Kelly Smith, along with her partner Jacquen ‘Boeta’ Appollis and associate Steveno van Rhyn, were convicted and sentenced for the child’s kidnapping and trafficking. The court heard that the young girl had been sold for R20,000.

Community Appeals And Ongoing Search Efforts

Earlier this month, Gayton McKenzie, Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture and leader of the Patriotic Alliance, launched the Joshlin Smith Foundation in Saldanha Bay. At the event, he expressed his belief that the child is still alive and indicated he would share supporting information with police.

Law enforcement continues to urge the public to come forward with any details that could assist the investigation.
