Police Recover Stolen R700,000 Toyota Hilux En Route To Beitbridge, Arrest Suspect

A 45-year-old man has been arrested after police intercepted a stolen Toyota Hilux Legend Edition double-cab worth an estimated R700,000 during an anti-smuggling operation outside Polokwane.

The arrest was made on Friday along the N1 South after officers, working with private security partners, acted on intelligence about a vehicle believed to be heading towards the Beitbridge Port of Entry.

Police say the operation prevented the suspected stolen bakkie from being smuggled across the border.

Stolen Toyota Hilux Recovered During Intelligence-Led Operation

The stolen Toyota Hilux was spotted travelling at high speed near the Shell Ultra City filling station on the N1 South outside Polokwane.

According to Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, officers who were monitoring the route immediately stopped the vehicle.

“Preliminary investigations revealed the double cab had been reported stolen at Loate police station in the Tshwane area. A 45-year-old driver was arrested on the spot and charged with possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle.”

The suspect remains in police custody while investigations continue.

Police Vow To Crack Down On Cross-Border Vehicle Smuggling

Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe praised the officers and private security teams involved in the successful operation.

She said intelligence-driven policing remains key to disrupting vehicle smuggling syndicates operating across South Africa’s borders.

“This recovery demonstrates what we can achieve through intelligence-driven operations and strong partnerships between police and private security role players.

“We will continue to target cross-border vehicle smuggling syndicates and ensure stolen vehicles are recovered, and criminals are apprehended to face the full might of the law,” Hadebe said.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 22 June 2026, on a charge of possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle.

Limpopo Police Continue Fight Against Vehicle Theft Syndicates

The latest recovery follows another major breakthrough by police earlier this year targeting organised vehicle theft networks.

In April, an intelligence-led operation resulted in the arrest of five undocumented Mozambican nationals linked to a vehicle theft syndicate operating across Limpopo, Gauteng, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

Police recovered several stolen high-value vehicles, including luxury SUVs and 4×4 bakkies connected to 22 criminal cases. Officers also seized vehicle parts, documentation and electronic equipment allegedly used to bypass vehicle security systems and facilitate cross-border smuggling.

Investigations into the latest case are continuing.
