Police Raid 26 Cape Town Sites In R1.6 Billion Municipal Fraud Probe

Western Cape police have launched a massive search and seizure operation across Cape Town as part of an investigation into allegations of fraud and corruption linked to municipal contracts worth R1.6 billion.
The raids, which began on Tuesday, saw officers swoop on 26 different locations, including private homes of municipal officials, business premises, and addresses connected to individuals and companies awarded contracts by the City of Cape Town.
Whistleblower Information Sparks Police Action
According to Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Andre Traut, the operation was triggered by information from a whistleblower and further preliminary investigations conducted by both the municipality and police.
“The operation, which stems from whistleblower information and preliminary investigation, is aimed at securing crucial evidence to establish the scope of alleged irregularities. SAPS has reiterated its commitment to fighting corruption and protecting public resources and urges the public to provide the necessary space to conduct their work,” Traut explained.

City of Cape Town spokesperson Luthando Tyhalibongo confirmed the municipality’s swift response in line with its anti-corruption stance.
“In line with the City’s zero tolerance approach to fraud and corruption, city forensic services took swift action to assess and report the matter to SAPS, who then undertook search and seizure operations took place at various addresses, including business premises, municipal buildings and private residences. More details will be made available by SAPS as the investigation progresses,” Tyhalibongo stated.
The investigation is ongoing, with more details expected to surface as police examine the seized material.
