Police Uncover R100 Million Drug Lab, Arrest Mexican National

Police in Gauteng have uncovered a massive drug manufacturing operation in Rietfontein, with an estimated value of R100 million in illicit drugs and related products. The discovery follows an extensive investigation into drug trafficking operations across the province.

Drug Manufacturing Equipment Seized

A multi-disciplinary police team, including the National and Provincial Organised Crime Units, Narcotics Units, and tactical response teams, conducted a search and seizure operation at the suspected drug lab.

Authorities uncovered various chemicals, drug manufacturing equipment, and methamphetamine, commonly known as crystal meth or tik. The lab was fully equipped for the production of large quantities of this highly addictive substance.

Alongside the drugs, law enforcement officials also seized large sums of cash, believed to be the proceeds from the criminal enterprise. This significant bust highlights the scale of the illegal drug trade operating within the region.

Arrest of Foreign National

During the operation, a 39-year-old Mexican national was arrested. The suspect is set to face charges related to the manufacturing and trafficking of drugs, as well as the violation of South Africa’s Immigration Act. Authorities are working to determine the full extent of the criminal network involved.

This raid is part of a broader effort to combat drug trafficking and illegal drug manufacturing in South Africa. On Monday, SurgeZirc SA reported that police arrested a 25-year-old Brazilian national at OR Tambo International Airport for attempting to smuggle drugs into the country.

The Mexican national will face charges in the Atteridgeville Magistrates Court, where he will answer for his role in operating the methamphetamine lab.
