Police Probe Chemical Bottle Attack In Tzaneen As GBH Case Opened

Police in Tzaneen have launched an investigation into an alleged assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm after a late-night incident in the town centre.

The case relates to events on Friday, 20 February 2026, at around 21:00 along King Edward Street in Tzaneen. Authorities confirmed that officers responded swiftly after reports of an explosion involving a bottle said to contain unknown chemicals.

According to a report by authorities, two men were walking home from church when the incident unfolded.

Tzaneen Chemical Bottle Explosion Leaves One Man Injured

It is alleged that an unidentified suspect hurled a bottle from a nearby yard in the direction of the pair. The bottle reportedly exploded in front of them.

One of the men suffered injuries to his lower body. He was taken to a local hospital, where he received medical treatment. The second man escaped unharmed.

Emergency services and police were called to the scene shortly after the explosion was reported.

SAPS Bomb Disposal Unit Called To King Edward Street Scene

Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), including the Bomb Disposal Unit, attended the scene to assess the situation and secure the area.

At this stage, no arrests have been made as investigations continue.

Authorities are appealing to members of the public who may have information about the incident to come forward.
