Police Orders Probe After KZN Cop Assaults Civilian In Viral Video

Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, the KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, has ordered a probe into a video in which a police officer assaults a civilian.

The video, which has gone viral on social media, shows a police officer manhandling a civilian who appears to represent no threat or danger to the officers.

The event allegedly occurred in Durban’s South Beach area.

Mkhwanazi stated that police officers are not above the law and should not act in such a manner. He then ordered that an investigation into the matter begin immediately.

“Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi said that police officers are not above the law and police uniform does not give police officers any powers to disregard the law and be the law unto themselves.

“He said that if the man in the video had committed any crime, police should have either detained him or effected an arrest instead of committing the crime of assault,” KZN police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda said.

Mkhwanazi stated that combating crime should begin inside the police ranks, and that the officer seen in the video should be held accountable.
