Police On Missing Joshlin Smith Probe: “We Have Come To A Dead End”

The heart-wrenching case of six-year-old Joshlin Smith, who vanished without a trace from her home in Saldanha Bay on February 19, continues to grip the nation.

Despite exhaustive efforts by law enforcement, the mystery surrounding her disappearance remains unsolved.

Joshlin, a Grade 1 learner at Diazville Primary School, is remembered for her infectious smile and green eyes. She lived with her mother in the close-knit community of Diazville when she went missing.

Principal Lee-Anne Davids-Hartzenberg described Joshlin as initially quiet but gradually opening up to her classmates.

On that fateful sunny day, Joshlin’s mother, Racquel “Kelly” Smith, dropped her off with her boyfriend, Jacquen Appollis, at around 8 a.m. Kelly then left for work, expecting Joshlin to play with friends.

When Kelly returned at 5 p.m., Joshlin was gone. Appollis claimed she had gone to play and never returned. Despite an hour of frantic searching, there was no sign of the little girl.

The critical first 24 hours elapsed, and the golden hour—the crucial time to locate a missing child—had passed.

Candice van der Rheede, founder of the Western Cape Missing Persons Unit, expressed concern that Joshlin might no longer be in the area. Police have analysed cellphone and forensics data, but leads have led to dead ends.

On Wednesday, provincial police commissioner Thembisile Patekile said investigators have explored all possible leads.

“We followed every lead – but we have come to a dead end. Every lead that has been given to us, we extended our net countrywide, worldwide, not even countrywide, worldwide.”

Community worker Veronique Pretorius reminisced about the bubbly girl who used to run down the street. Residents miss her presence, and her sudden disappearance remains a haunting void.

Authorities have postponed the case, and Joshlin’s mother, her boyfriend, and two others remain behind bars. The investigation continues, fueled by hope that answers will emerge.
