Four Bellville Police Officers Arrested For Allegedly Robbing Delft Shop Of R18 300

Four police officers attached to the Bellville Rapid Railway Unit in Cape Town appeared in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Monday after allegedly stealing R18 300 during a so-called search at a Somalian-owned shop in Delft.

The accused — Constable Monono, Sergeant Ntsali, Constable De Bruyn, and Warrant Officer Daniels — were arrested at the weekend following an investigation by the Western Cape Anti-Corruption Unit. The alleged robbery occurred on 2 October 2025 at a store in Heinkel Crescent, The Hague.

According to police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk, the officers were on duty at the time of the incident. The shop owner took a photo of the SAPS vehicle, which later helped investigators confirm its presence at the scene through the SAPS Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) system.

“Incidents of this nature are condemned by SAPS management and offenders can expect to face the consequences of their deeds, both criminally and departmentally,” said Van Wyk.

Cellphone Records Tie Police Officers to the Scene

Investigators also found cellphone records placing all four officers at the premises when the robbery occurred. After presenting the findings to the Director of Public Prosecutions, the case was officially registered as a business robbery.

On Sunday, Warrant Officer Daniels was arrested at his Heideveld residence, while the remaining three were apprehended at their Bellville Rapid Rail office. They were subsequently detained at Bellville police station.

The state is opposing bail, and the case has been postponed to Wednesday, 5 November, for a formal bail application.

GOOD Party Demands Accountability

The GOOD Party has expressed outrage following news of the arrests, describing the incident as a “devastating betrayal of public trust.”

In a statement, Brett Herron, a member of the Unite for Change Leadership Council and GOOD member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament, said:

“The allegations that officers entrusted with protecting communities instead abused their positions to rob a local business are a devastating betrayal of public trust and highlight ongoing concerns about corruption and criminality within some sections of law enforcement.”

Herron commended the Western Cape Anti-Corruption Unit for their swift action but called for greater internal accountability and transparency within SAPS.

“It is unacceptable that those meant to uphold the law become perpetrators of the very crimes they are mandated to prevent,” Herron said.

“We call on SAPS management to ensure that this case is pursued with full transparency and that disciplinary proceedings run parallel to the criminal investigation. Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done.”

The GOOD Party further reiterated its call for stronger independent monitoring mechanisms within SAPS to root out corruption and protect honest officers who continue to serve with integrity.
